Tommy Welch
Dr. Tommy Welch brings 27 years of dedicated service to public education, with experience in both the Boston and Los Angeles school districts. His career spans twelve years as a teacher and instructional coach, four years as a middle and high school principal, and over a decade as a regional school superintendent. Across these roles, he has remained focused on ensuring that students thrive, regardless of school type or neighborhood. His deep and varied experience has shaped him into a versatile district leader known for visionary instructional leadership, effective change management, and a talent for building strong relationships and coalitions. At the core of his work is an unwavering commitment to excellence and equity.
As the regional school superintendent of Region 1 in Boston Public Schools for most of his eleven years with the district, Tommy currently oversees 15 schools across Charlestown, East Boston, and the North End—including two high schools, twelve elementary schools, and one early education center. His leadership is centered on improving academic outcomes and fostering a shared instructional vision across this diverse network. Under his guidance, Region 1 schools have earned notable recognition: four have received the prestigious EdVestors School on the Move Award, three have been named Schools of Recognition by DESE, and one was honored with the 2024 National Distinguished School Award.
Tommy is a proud graduate of Occidental College and UCLA, and he earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Boston College in 2020. He lives in East Boston with his wife, Karla, and their two children, both of whom attend Boston Public Schools. Deeply rooted in the community, he serves on the boards of East Boston Little League, Boston Scores, Maverick Landing Community Services, Every Child Shines, and East Boston FC.
